Sailing Instruction

Certification Information

Basic Sailing

24 hrs., for beginners. After this, you'll charter sailboats as big as 30 ft

Next Courses:

The first class starts at 8am.
Parking available across the street from the Aventura building (if you don't have a gate card).

Intermediate Sailing

All on the-water, with NO WRITTEN TEST (If you have already passed your basic exam).
After this, you'll charter sailboats as big as 34 ft.

Next Intermediate Labs:

 with NO WRITTEN TEST.

Advanced Sailing

For those with experience, this course will let you charter boats through 40 ft.

Next Advanced Seamanship Course:

This course prepares you for the larger boats.
Mark's Knots

Coastal Navigation

Required for overnight charters and offshore island trips.
Take this in three sessions, or a single day, or by correspondence.

We also offer an excellent Navigation Correspondence Course, which covers the same material,
which you can take at your leisure, and return the test to receive your certification.

Cruising Catalina Island

There's a lot more to Catalina than you can reach on a ferry in an afternoon!
Whether your interest is snorkeling and diving in a deserted cove, hiking the interior,
golfing at the West's oldest course, sailing all the way around the island,
or being part of a fleet sail to Catalina, our experts will show you the best spots to explore,
and how to sail to them on our boats. THERE IS NO WRITTEN EXAM!

Marine Weather

Basic principles of meteorology and certain related aspects of
oceanography as it relates to the safe operation of ocean-going craft.
(Note: Registration is at Saddleback College, Mission Viejo CA
but the class is taught at Aventura).

Private Lessons

Feel better with the personal attention of one of our instructors on a boat?

Have specific things you want to brush up on?

Need a special time? Want a lesson with just you and your family, or special friends?

For whatever reason you want, we can provide a 3 hour private session 
with one of our instructors on one of our boats, at a time convenient for you.

Shadow Sailors

A new program has been developed to help newly graduated sailors feel more comfortable taking out their first charters.  A “shadow sailor” is an experienced Aventura member who will accompany the new member as a guest, and at no charge, to be a backup if help is needed, as reassurance, or to give reminders of things forgotten or unsafe.  If you want to take advantage of this volunteer program, contact the office and have the handout mailed to you or stop by and pick one up.  If you feel you are qualified to be a “Shadow Sailor”
and would like to be a volunteer, please contact  captaincookrn@cs.com
