Since 1999, Aventura
Sailing has been proud to be associated with Olive Crest, a leading
provider of children's foster care and adoption services, and an enabler of
healthy families. Every month, on a Sunday afternoon, Aventura's members and
friends assemble a fleet of three to eight boats to take foster children and
teens in the Olive Crest program out sailing. The chance to expose these young
people, who have not all had the best of experiences with the world, to a part
of life they might not ordinarily see, has been rewarding for everyone involved.
Because sailing is a team
sport, the kids and teens who go sailing learn teamwork skills that can help
them in later life. And they have to show up on time and be presentable,
building real-world attitudes and abilities that move them forward from what may
have been very troubled pasts into much brighter and more real futures. Aventura
is happy to work with Olive Crest to help bring young people into the mainstream
of healthy, active living.
These sails are usually on
the third Sunday afternoon of each month, and end with the kids enjoying pizza
and soft drinks shoreside. The Olive Crest Kids Sailing program is successful
because of the efforts of a number of Aventura members. And we're always looking
for more help. For information on becoming a volunteer, donating a boat,
or any of the other aspects of the program as it runs today, please e-mail
program coordinator Lou Bucello (click

Aventura hopes to continue
its association with Olive Crest and the kids for a long time to come.
