Racing

Program Overview

Sailing is a wonderful time on the water, and yacht racing is exhilarating sailing.  It is great to see your interest in racing and we look forward to racing with you soon on our two very competitive race boats in our fleet - the Beneteau First 27  and our J109 Mariah.

The emphasis for the Aventura Racing program is to provide local cruising sailors access to education, qualification and the opportunity for recreational racing.   Aventura Racing is a division of Aventura Sailing and aims to expand its outstanding record of educating and providing charter opportunities for the more than ten thousand South County locals who have sailed with us since 1976.

A key element of our Racing Program are a series of education Clinics and qualification modelled on past Aventura and the newly offered American Sailing Association (ASA) sailing courses.  The entry level racing Clinic we offer, Introduction to Keelboat Racing started in December 2020 is offered monthly going forward.  See the schedule and related information below and register to let us know you are interested in the Clinic or just joining us for racing.  For experienced racers we will offer a “challenge” approach to qualification and race boat chartering.

Experienced sailors with a minimum of Aventura Advanced or ASA 103 certification who want to learn the art of racing from introduction, to Competent Crew and Racing Skipper will usually start with the Introduction to Racing Clinic unless they have previous racing experience.  A racing resume allows members to “Challenge” a Clinic to achieve their qualifications.

The three main Clinics are aimed at Non-Spinnaker racing qualification.  There is a lot more Non-spin racing than spin racing here in Dana Point and almost all club and coastal races offer a Non-Pin class.  Our Non-spin foundation approach makes racing less daunting and risky and it is our philosophy that non-spin racing offers the best opportunity to master the basics of racing and build confidence before tackling the added complexities of Spinnaker Racing.

Spinnaker racing is a spectacular and very enjoyable part of Racing and is offered as an optional follow-on qualification through a series of additional clinics.
